How Ayurveda can Improve Your Child’s Memory and IQ

Ayurveda for Children

Has your child ever been in a situation when they are cramming for an exam and getting stressed because they aren’t able to retain much? Want to know how to increase brain power of your child?

This is where Ayurveda can help. This time-honored healing tradition can positively impact your child’s mental health, ease exam stress and boost performance. Developing psychological balance or an optimum state of mind can ensure that the sense organs function to their fullest – with awareness, sharpness, concentration and longer attention span which all lead to good memory and better decision-making.

According to Ayurveda, the reasons behind low IQ and poor memory can be attributed to malnutrition and chemical imbalances of the brain which could be brought on by medication and antibodies.

Ayurveda states that the biohumor associated with Water and Earth elements – Kapha dosha. When vitiated, Kapha affects the mind causing it to become dull and disinterested.

Similarly, stress and confusion are caused by vitiated Vata dosha (biohumor related to Air and Ether elements). Vata dosha has its seat in the nervous system and memory functions.

Therefore, sound memory depends on both Vata and Kapha doshas being in balance.

Pitta dosha (biohumor associated with Fire and Water) is the driving force in improving IQ and sharpness.

Ayurvedic Diet to Nourish the Brain

  • Nurture the mind with a diet that is light and nourishing. Fresh fruits, nuts and seeds, green vegetables and healthy fats such as ghee make up a diet that removes excess Kapha, unclogs Vata passages and enhances Pitta qualities.
  • Processed and refined foods should be avoided as far as possible. Sauces, white flour, sweets, fizzy drinks, etc. are all on the no-no list.
  • Do not let your child take stimulants such as tea or coffee.
  • Replace refined sugar with honey and palm sugar to balance the doshas and boost memory.

Herbs for Memory and Brain Health

The following herbs for brain health are extremely effective in improving memory and are safe for children.

Brahmi – Boosts blood circulation to the brain, maintains the health of the cerebral vessels

Bhringaraj – Enhances the ability to deal with stress, improves memory and IQ

Ayurveda states that if waste is not eliminated correctly then the toxins tend to accumulate in the body and block channels in the bran and body.
