How an Elimination Diet Can Work Wonders for You

There are several people who suffer through various sorts of food related disorders and allergies. The Elimination Diet aims at specifically addressing this issue. This isn’t necessarily a diet, but is more akin to a scientific process. What, you say? Let us explain.

Process of Elimination

Firstly the Elimination Diet in and of itself, isn’t necessarily a diet plan, but rather a how-to guide. It works on the process of elimination or exclusion (also known as the exclusion diet), of certain foods by trial and error. Much like scientific testing.

How it Works

The Elimination Diet removes food groups from a person’s daily dietary intake; these food groups may cause allergies or other adverse reactions. These adverse reactions could range from gastrointestinal issues and bloating, to acne and eczema. Simply, this could be termed as 'a food allergy elimination diet.' Once multiple food groups have been eliminated, they can be gradually reintroduced to determine which food groups cause allergies and which do not.

It is estimated that 8 primary foods account for 90% of food allergens. The elimination diet food list can include, but is not limited to:

  • Gluten
  • Dairy
  • Soy
  • Refined/added sugar
  • Peanuts
  • Corn
  • Alcohol
  • Eggs
  • Packaged, processed or fast foods

Benefits of the Elimination Diet

The most apparent benefit of the Elimination Diet is that it would allow you to determine what foods you are allergic to. But here are some not so obvious benefits:

  • It can help reduce symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
  • It can help treat acne, and or eczema.
  • It has been shown to alleviate, and even treat symptoms of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) in children.

Why it Could Benefit You?

If you suffer from allergies or some of the above mentioned symptoms, the Elimination Diet is more than just some sort of fad, where you expect to lose x kgs, in x amount of time. No, this diet will enable a lifestyle of healthier, and arguably happier living. As with starting any diet, please consult a healthcare professional first, and if you’re on the diet, write to us and share your thoughts!
