An alcohol hangover involves two or more of
the following symptoms: headache, nausea, diarrhea, lack of
appetite, shakiness, feeling tired and an overall feeling of
being unwell.
There are numerous changes in the balance of hormones,
neurotransmitters and other biological substances in the body.
This neurobiological imbalance leads to rapid heart rate and
increased work load on the heart which is responsible for
increased cardiac mortality. There is a diffuse slowing of the
brain waves after all alcohol has cleared the body.
Neuromuscular performance is also impaired long after alcohol
is undetectable in blood.
Women may not be just imagining that they don't hold their
liquor as well as their male drinking partners. A new study
finds hangovers are more likely to hit women than men, even
after controlling for differences in the amount of alcohol
consumed by each sex.
