Termed
`Madhumeha' in Ayurveda, its
incidence is higher amongst the older and the obese.
Originating from an absolute or relative lack of insulin, it
gives way to abnormalities in the metabolism of
carbohydrates, proteins and fat in the body. Characterized by abnormally high levels of blood glucose and its
subsequent excretion through urine.

Herbs
which is useful :
Gurmar (Gymnema sylvestre)
Gurmar stimulates insulin secretion and has blood sugar reducing
properties. It blocks sweet taste receptors when applied to tongue in diabetes to
remove glycosuria. It deadens taste of sweets & bitter things like quinine (effects lasts for 1 to 2 hours).
Besides having these properties, it is a cardiac stimulant and diuretic. Also corrects metabolic activities of liver,
kidney & muscles.
Neem (Azadirachta indica)

Neem leaf extracts have
been shown to reduce insulin requirements of diabetics
without apparent effect on blood glucose levels. Different
studies show insulin requirement reductions of between 20
percent and 50 percent for those who take five grams of
dried Neem leaf capsules. There are even anecdotal reports
of diabetics chewing a single Neem leaf daily that have been
able to eliminate insulin injections completely.
Giloy (Tinospora
cordifolia)

It has long been known in Ayurvedic literature as a
tonic, vitalizer and a remedy for diabetes and metabolic
disorders. It has been used to reduce blood glucose level.
In general debility, dyspepsia, fevers and urinary diseases.
The bitter principles present in this herb show anti-periodic,
antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties.
The plant is used in Ayurvedic to improve the immune system
and body’s resistance against infections. it is used as
immunomodulator in immunosuppression of obstructive
jaundice, hepatic fibrosis, peritonitis and sepsis. The
plant has been found effective in preventing fibrous changes
and promotes regeneration of the liver from drug induced
hepatic toxicity.
Karela
(Bitter
Melon)

The vegetable Karela or bitter
gourd or hairy mordica helps to lower blood glucose levels.
British researchers have given this plant and alternative
name plant insulin. They have found that eating karela over
long periods significantly lowers sugar levels in the blood
and urine. Throughout history, the extracts of karela have
been used in natural medicine of their purifying qualities.
Karela is a blood purifier, activates spleen and liver and
is highly beneficial in diabetes. It is a purgative,
appetizer, digestive, anti inflammatory, anti flatulent and
has healing capacity.
Diet :

Avoid
sugar in any form-rice, potato, banana, cereals
& fruits containing high percentage of sugar
content.

Do
away with fatty stuff.

Go
for the following low-calorie, low-fat alkaline diet
of high quality natural foods.

Seeds:
Paslane seeds .Seeds of bitter
gourd & Fenugreek

Vegetables:
Bitter Gourd, string beans, cucumber, onion, garlic

Fruits:
Indian Gooseberry, Jamul Fruit, Grape Fruit.

Grains:
Bengal gram, black gram.

Dairy
Products: Home-made cottage cheese and various forms
of soured milk such as curd and butter milk.

Emphasis
should be on raw vegetables & herbs as they play
a part in stimulating the pancreas and enhancing insulin
production.

Style :

Lifestyle:
Don't indulge in day-time sleep.

Should
take care not to injure yourself
as you take time to heal. As a result, there is a
possibility of the wound becoming septic.

Should
take adequate eye care
as the disease in serious condition might affect the
eye.

If
you are afflicted by any other disease,
you should take prompt actions since you lack
resistance.
