Do you know what is Arthritis?
It may begin as slight morning stiffness.
For the lucky person with arthritis, that's as far as it goes. But
for millions of others, arthritis can become a disabling, even crippling,
disease.
Arthritis
is a broad term covering many types of joint ailments. The ailments
can be autoimmune disorders, infections, and the result of wear
on the joints or simply inflammation. This may be acute or chronic.
Generally though it is the inflammation or the pain associated with
it that is treated regardless of the origin.
In
Ayurveda Arthritis is commonly known as ‘Amavata’ which means joints
and vat is usually prominence cause in this disease. This is mainly
caused by the production and circulation of a substance called ‘ama’
in the body. Improper digesting as well as metabolism produces this
‘AMA’ and it gets logged in joints
to produce inflammation and pain.
Warning
signs of arthritis include:
- Swelling
in one or more joints
- Prolonged
early morning stiffness
- Recurring
pain or tenderness in any joint
- Inability
to move joint normally
- Inability
to move joint normally
- Unexplained
fevers, weight loss or weakness with joint pain
Common
types of arthritis include:
Osteoarthritis
Caused
by normal wear and tear on the joints, this chronic condition is
usually not serious. However a joint may degenerate to the point
where replacement surgery is needed.
Rheumatoid
Arthritis
A
type of inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic
condition caused by the body's immune system attacking joint-lining
tissue.
Infectious
Arthritis
Infectious
agents include bacteria, fungi and viruses. This type of arthritis
can affect anyone. Usually, prompt diagnosis and treatment results
in recovery.
Gout
Gout
is most common in men older than 40 and is caused by a metabolic
disorder in which uric acid builds up in the blood and crystals
form in joints and other places.
Psoriatic
Arthritis
Bone
and other joint tissues become inflamed, and, like rheumatoid arthritis,
it can affect the whole body. Affects about 5 percent of people
with psoriasis, a chronic skin disease. Likely to affect fingers
or spine. Symptoms are mild in most people but can be quite severe.
REMEDIES
A good
natural calcium and magnesium supplement may be helpful. Anti inflammatory
and lymphatic herbs for the treatment of arthritis are cleavers,
devils–claw, and meadowsweet. If there is muscle cramping or tension
as well as joint pain, add cramp bark or valerian to the mixture.
We suggest an herbal combination including equal parts of:
- Devil’s-
claw
- Cleavers
- Meadowsweet
Make
a decoction by boiling the devil’s-claw root in 1-˝ pints of water
for 10 minutes. Reduce to 1 pint. Add the aboveground parts of cleavers
and meadow sweet, cover and steep for another 10 minutes. Use 1
ounce of the total combined herbs recommended, and drink up to 3
cups daily.
Exercise
In
the past, doctors often advised arthritis patients to rest and avoid
exercise. Rest remains important, especially during flares. But
doing nothing results in weak muscles, stiff joints, reduced mobility,
and lost vitality. Now, rheumatologists routinely advise a balance
of physical activity and rest. Exercise offers physical and psychological
benefits that include improved overall fitness and well being, increased
mobility, and better sleep.
Joints
require motion to stay healthy. That's why doctors advise arthritis
patients to do range-of-motion, or flexibility, exercises every
day -- even during flares. Painful or swollen joints should be moved
gently, however.
Strengthening
and endurance activities are also recommended, but should be limited
or avoided during flares. Arthritis patients should consult their
doctors before starting an exercise program, and begin gradually.
Exercises must be individualized to work the right muscles while
avoiding overstressing affected joints.
Muscle
strength is especially important because strong muscles better support
and protect joints. Several studies show that if you improve muscle
strength, you decrease pain. Joints will probably hurt during exercise,
but shouldn't still hurt several hours later.
LATEST
RESEARCH
New
treatments are likely to stem from better understanding of the underlying
causes and destructive processes of the disease. Overuse, injury
and obesity are contributing factors in osteoarthritis, and researchers
have implicated a faulty gene in the breakdown of cartilage. Heredity
plays a role in other forms of arthritis, too, increasing susceptibility
in some people. Potential genetic therapy approaches are still far
off, however.
