Almost everyone has suffered at its hands at some point of time or another. Some much more than others. While at times all that is needed to relieve the dull throbbing is rest and relaxation, and better understanding of the problem, specialy of the type termed migraines, and its causes is necessary to be able to avoid the same.

Most experts believe that chemical disturbances in the brain are primarily responsible for migrains. It appears that a normal drop in the level of ‘serotonin’-a brain chemical that regulates blood vessel changes and controls pain causes blood vessels in the brain to swell, prompting nerves to fire off sensations of pain. Factors such as stress, diet, menstruation, weather changes, bright lights and smoke can trigger off this very painful chain of events.

Diet plays a somewhat controversial role in triggering headaches, particularly migraines. Even among those genetically prone to migraines, individual differences make it difficult to pinpoint the extent to which diet leads to headache. However, experts estimate that 10% to 30% of migraine sufferers have diet triggers. While there’s no such thing as foolproof anti-migraine menu, here are some prime dietary suspects.

Alcohol, that also causes blood vessels to expand, is possibly the most suspect. In addition to ethanol, alcoholic beverages may contain a number of other migraine provoking substances, suchas tyramine and phenols, found mostly in red wine, Champagne and beer can be especially troublesome.

Although the likelihood of food addictive triggering headaches is considered very small, some migraine sufferers however claim sensitivity to foods containing nitrates, such as hot dogs, cold cuts and smoked food. In any case if you feel that certain foods bring on headaches, avoid them.

The relationship of caffeine to headaches is a little paradoxical. A little caffeine can help relieve a headache; too much can bring one on. Here’s why initially caffeine constricts the blood vessels, offering some relief. But as you take in more caffeine, the blood vessels dilate causing another on the rebound.
