One of the most common ailments is fever. Fever arises on your body temperature. It is a symptom rather than a disease. Most commonly fever occurs when your body is trying to fight off a viral or a bacterial infection. When your body mobilizes white blood cells to fight off infections, proteins called pyrogens are released, causing the body to raise its temperature in yet another attack on the infections. Fever is thus a natural attempt on the part of the body to rid itself of toxic matter. The goal of herbal remedies is to help your body through its fever in the most efficient way and to reduce the fever. You must drink plenty of liquids to replace the fluids you lose when you have fever. Liquids will also flush out toxins from the body and thus help reduce fever. According to ayurveda, increased body temperature is due to vitiated pitta. Low digestive fire is almost always associated with this disorder.

Heabal Remedies

  • Holy Basil: The leaves of Holy Basil are one of the most effective of several home remedies in the treatment of common fever. A decoction made of about twelve grams of these leaves boiled in half a liter of water, should be administered twice daily with half a cup of milk, one teaspoon of sugar and a quarter teaspoon of powdered cardamom (chhoti elaichi). This will bring down the temperature.

  • Fenugreek: A tea made from fenugreek seeds is equal in reducing fevers. This tea should be taken twice daily. It is particularly valuable as a cleansing and soothing drink. Fenugreek seeds, when moistened with water, become slightly mucilaginous, and hence, the tea made from them has the power to dissolve a sticky substance like mucus.

  • Herbal Tea: A good Herbal remedy for fever is ginger tea. You can drink cups of ginger tea all day long. It is diaphoretic, which means it makes you sweet and it can help you sweat your fever out.

  • Chirayata (Swertia chirayata): 3-6 gm of chirayata powder is excellent to reduce fever in a short time. This should be mixed with kutki and tulsi (Holy Basil) and made into powder for best effect.

  • Orange Juice: Orange is an excellent food in all types of fever when the digestive power of the body is seriously hampered. The patient suffers from blood poisoning called toxemia, and the lack of salvia results in the coating of his tongue, often destroying his thirst for water. The flavor of orange juice helps greatly in overcoming these drawbacks. Orange juice is the ideal liquid food for fevers. It provides energy, increases urinary output, and promotes body resistance against infections, thereby hastening recovery.

Diet

The patient should eat light and nutritious food. Non-vegetarian food should be avoided. The vegetables should be fresh and lightly cooked. It is best to drink
7-8 glasses of warm water in a day to flush out toxins from the body.
