Panchakarma oils
Ayurveda emphasizes preventive and healing
therapies along with various methods of purification and
rejuvenation. Ayurveda is more than just a healing system, it is
a science and art of appropriate living which helps to achieve
longevity. It also prevents diseases. To achieve this status of
body, mind and consciousness, Ayurveda prescribes Panchakarma
Therapy for cleansing of body toxins.
Panchakarma is a five-fold treatment for mental and physical well
being - tunes the body, organs, mind, breath, nerves and purifies
the blood.
Panchakarma is a very special Ayurvedic
operation which requires proper guidance from trained and skillful
Ayurvedic practitioners & one should consult an Ayurvedic
physician, before choosing these cleansing procedures. Panchakarma
is done for each person with his or her specific constitution and
specific disorder, thus it requires close observation and
supervision. It is also recommended for healthy people as a
preventive treatment.
As the name indicates, Pancha in Sanskrit stands for Five, and
Karma for therapeutic measures thereby meaning five types of
therapeutic measures. These are undertaken for the purification of
the body and Ayurveda considers it necessary before the start of
any other therapy.
The Panchakarma therapy of Ayurveda comprises of five basic types
of advanced treatment for evacuation of vitiated Dosha (toxic
materials) from the body. One can consider this as a cleansing
program of toxins from the body. There are so many subtypes of
therapy and different types of herbal massages, fomentations like
steam, external oil treatments; Basti (medicated enemas),
Virechana (purgation through herbs), Vamana (emesis through
herbs), Nasya (nasal administration of oils) etc. These practices
are extremely helpful in relieving deep rooted diseases and it is
also beneficial for maintaining and improving physical and mental
health.
Snehana -Oelation Therapy
This involves saturation of the body with
herbal & medicated oil via external & internal oelation to make it
soft and disintegrate the doshas. It takes between three to seven
days to take effect. The medium used is of 4 types - vegetable oils
(for external oelation) and clarified butter (for internal
oelation).Caution should be exercised in ensuring that oil used
matches need of the patient.
Abhyanga:
Abhyanga or oil massage, which is vigorously done but is soothing
in effect, is intended to loosen and ease the body cells. The
deposited impurities are removed and ‘prana’, the life force is
made to move through the body. Thus the nervous centre and mind
regains the lost, the skin becomes soft, circulation is stimulated
and helps sound sleep.
Swedan:
This sweat treatment opens up the pores of the skin thus getting
rid of the fluid impurities from the body. Swedan is carried out
either by a herbal steam bath or by exercise. It relaxes the body,
improves blood circulation, results in weight loss, and tones up
the skin.
