Jamikand / Suran / Amorphophallus campanulatus



Origin of Herbs:

It is cultivated largely throughout the plains of India.
This plant produces a single inflorescence followed by a solitary leaf. The plant is deciduous, dying back to a large underground corm, weighing up to 8kg.The height of this plant is generally 60-90 cm. Leaves are single but occasionally twice might be seen, flowers are greenish violet color. Flower of the plant generally grows in the month of April to June and fruits in the month of November. Tuber if this plant are used for therapeutic purpose.

Cultivation :

Amorphophallus are greedy and thirsty during their growing season but need to be kept almost dry during dormancy. They require a humus rich soil and a weekly dose of a balanced fertilizer. They are happiest in dappled shade. Tubers should be planted approx. 10 inches deep in early spring.

Chemical Composition :

Tuber contains - Moist 38.3%, Protein 1.2%, Fat 0.1%, Carbohydrate 18.4%, Minerals 0.8%, Calcium 0.05%, Phosphors 0.02% and Iron 0.4mg, Vitamin A - 434 unit, Vitamin B - 20 unit in 100 gm.

External uses :

Paste of the Tuber highly effective in joint pain and oedema.

Internal Uses :

Tuber is used as tonic, restorative, carminative and also stimulant.

Piles:

This herb is one of the precious gifts of nature for curing internal and as well as external piles.

Rheumatism: 

To treat rheumatism and artharitis a teaspoon of the powder of the dry fruit can be taken twice daily for a month. It is also considered as an effective remedy for joint pain, swelling of small and big joints, gout etc.

Digestive Disorder:
 

Jamikand has revitalizing effect in anorexia, Acidity, heart burn, pain in abdomen and also in intestional worm.

Respiratory disorders:

Jamikand is beneficial in the treatment of respiratory disorders. It is especially valuable in cough and cold.

General Weakness: 

The powder of the Tuber has revitalizing effects, as it contains an element which is very valuable in general weakness and vertigo.
