Description:
Parts
Used: Bark.
It
is a large deciduous tree with height of 60 to 80 feet. The
bark is
used as a
cardiac tonic. Locally it has been used in wounds, for promoting union of
fractures and dispersion of ecchymosed.
A large tree with spreading
branches and white bark. Leaves sub opposite, ovate, coriaccous. Flowers sessile
yellowish in short axillaries spikes, bracteoles minute. Fruit samara with 5-7
equal wings(3).
Flowers small, white. Fruit 2.3–3.5 cm long, fibrous woody, glabrous with 5
hard wings, striated with numerous curved veins. Flowering time April–July in
Indian conditions. Seeds hard germination 50–76 days (50–60%)
Every parts useful medicinal properties Arjuna holds a reputed position in both
Ayurvedic and Unani Systems of medicine. According to Ayurveda it is alexiteric,
styptic, tonic, anthelmintic, and useful in fractures, ulcers, heart diseases,
biliousness, urinary discharges, asthma, tumors, leucoderma, anemia, excessive
prespiration etc. According to Unani system of medicine, it is used both
externally and internally in gleets and urinary discharges. It is used as
expectorant, aphrodisiac, tonic and diuretic.
Distribution:
Common in almost every part of India. Grows well along bank of streams,
rivers, ravines, dry water courses, reaching very large sizes on fertile
alluvial loam.
Major Constituents:
Arjunic acid, Arjunin, Terminic acid, glycosides such Arjunoside I to IV.
Doshas effect:
Pacifies Pitta & Kapha Doshas.
Ayurvedic Properties:
Astringent, light, cold, pungent.

Heart diseases can manifest in any of the three doshas
(Vata, Pitta and Kapha).
Vata types manifest more in old age where there is drying out of the tissue and
harding of the arteries . Pitta types manifest with anger, irritability,
