Lodhra
(Botanical Name: Symplocos racemosa)

Description and
composition:
The name Lodhra is descriptive of the
property of this plant to cure ophthalmia. Lodhra has been mentioned
in the Charaka Samhita as a sovereign astringent of the Rasayan
Dasamoola Kwath it is also part of the febrifuge Sarvajwarnashak
churna mentioned in the Kashyap Samhita
The tree is found very commonly in the plains and lower hills of
Bengal, Assam and Burma. It is also found in the dry forests of the
Chhota-Nagpur plateau up to an altitude of 2500 ft. above the sea
level.
This is a small tree, with dark green leathery leaves. The leafstalk
is small. the cream colored flowers are small, and grouped in
clusters. The fruit is purplish black and 1 cm long.
Healing
power and curative properties
EXTERNAL
USES:
- Its
paste is used in skin diseases, swelling, bleeding wounds and
ulcers. It also strengthens the gums.
INTERNAL
USES:
- It
is useful in diarrhoea, dysentery and tenesmus.
- Circulatory
system:
It is useful in bleeding disorders.
- Reproductive system: It
is useful in inflammation of the uterus and reduces leucorrhoea and menorrhagia.
- Skin:
It is useful in skin diseases requiring purification of the skin.
Pyrexia:
Antipyretic, hence useful in fevers origination from Kapha -
Pitta.
Lodhra Tree has been traditionally used as a uterine tonic. Numerous
references attest to its value in maintaining optimum women's
health. Additionally, the plant and its formulations have been
effective in healing wounds and controlling bleeding.
