Indian Name :  Gokshura
Botanical Name : Tribulus Terrestris
Family:  Zygophllaceae
Parts Use:  Whole Plant, Seeds 

Description:

Mature plant: Prostrate with stems up to 2m long. Leaves are opposite, each consisting of 4-8 pairs of spear shaped leaflets. There are long hairs on the leaf margins and lower surface. Stems are round and hairy. Flowers are yellow
Seeds: Enclosed in a woody star-shaped structure 5-7 mm long and 5-6 mm wide (carpels). Up to five seeds in each carpel each seed 1.5-3 mm long, yellow. Each plant can have upwards of 2000 seeds
Seedlings: Cotyledons are narrow oval, round apex and hairless. Immature plants have leaves divided into pairs of hairy oval leaflets with pointed apices
Flowers: Yellow, 8-15 mm diameter, 5 petals.
Fruit: Woody burr about 1 cm diameter with sharp spines to 6 mm long. Burr consists of 5 wedge shaped segments. Each segment has 2 unequal pairs of spines.

Cultivation :  

The plant grows well in sandy soil where there is a good drainage. The land is ploughed well and seeds are sown in nursery in the month of June-July. 10-15 cm long seedlings are transplanted to the main plots at the distance of 15x15cm. Irrigate the field immediately after transplanting and in late stages, it does not require much water.

Harvesting: 
Fruits can be collected during September-November. Dig-out the roots, clean and dry before sale. Now a days, whole plant is also sold in the trade.

Benefits of Gokshura

It is currently acknowledged by herbalists as being beneficial in the treatment of stress (which can interfere with fertility) due to its calming effect on the nervous system.

It is also used in Ayurveda medicine to maintain efficient kidney and urinary functions and reduces renal discomfort It is effective in most urinary tract disorders because it promotes the flow of urine, cools and soothes the membranes of the urinary tract and helps remove stones.

It acts by stopping bleeding and nourishes and strengthens the kidneys and reproductive organs. Gokshura may be combined with Ginger (Zingiber officinalis) , Pippali (Piper methysticum root) or Wild Yam ( Dioscorea villosa ) to ease back pain, and the ash of the whole plant is used for external application in rheumatoid arthrtis .

Gokshura is thought to aid the flow of urine by cooling and soothing the membranes of the urinary tract.

It also is widely believed to have aphrodisiac properties. This herb is known to increase the quantity of semen and is useful in diseases of the genitourinary tract.
