 Detox for good health

Pollution levels are increasing by the day. Approximately four million new chemicals have been created since 1915; many of them are used in pesticides, insecticides, preservatives, food additives, cosmetics, shampoos, hair products, disinfectants, detergents, room fresheners, and various medicines. These poisonous substances enter our system and lodge themselves in the body tissues. Some toxins are also produced in our intestine by undigested food. Together, these pollutants create most of the diseases we suffer from. Although, our body is capable of removing all harmful substances from the system, it has its limitations. If it is over-burdened, the eliminating organs such as the liver and kidneys get tired and their efficiency is reduced. If they are not taken care of in a timely manner, their health deteriorates and we become prone to serious life threatening ailments like cancer and renal failure and other digestive diseases and ailments. To stay healthy, it is essential to help the body by removing the stored 'foreign matter' periodically. The most effective way to detoxify the system is through yogic cleansing techniques such as neti and dhauti. Saline water is used in these kriyas to wash the system clean. But, these exercises should be learnt directly from a yoga guru or strictly done under supervision. But here is a combination that you can do that is very effective.

Fasting : Try and fast once a week. When there is no food, the body saves its energy and directs it to eliminate toxins.

Massage : It squeezes the toxins out of the tissues, and stimulates the lymph glands to carry them away for elimination.

Sauna : The high temperature of the sauna enhances excretion of xenobiotics stored in the tissues.

Detoxifying food : Jaggery, mint leaves, garlic and coriander leaves help in mobilising metals which are filtered by the lymphs and excreted through the urine and stool. Green chillies have a cell-sealing property that prevents toxins from getting into the tissues from the blood. The body needs to change non-water soluble chemicals to water soluble ones for easy disposability. This transformation is done by certain enzymes with the help of certain minerals. Hence, food containing these minerals must be taken regularly. The minerals are choline, copper, manganese, magnesium, zinc, lecithin, iron, and betacarotene.
