Botanical Name :  Withania Somnifera
Family:  Solanaceae or Nightshade
Parts Use:  Root

Ashwagandha in Sanskrit means "smelling like a horse ", Probably originating from the odor of its fresh root which resembles that of a sweaty horse.

Ashwagandha root is a herb of the ages. It is the 'ginseng' of Ayurvedic medicine. Ancient Ayurvedic texts including the Charaka and Sushruta Samhitas praise Ashwagandha as a tonic particularly for emaciation in people of all ages of both men and women

Cultivation :

Ashwagandha is cultivated throughout drier areas of India. It grows as a stout shrub that reaches a height of 5 feet (170 centimeters) with a central stem from which branches extend radially in a star pattern. Ashwagandha bears yellow flowers and red fruit which are berrylike in size and shape. The ripe fruit has milk-coagulating properties.

Climatic conditions for growth

Ashwagandha is grown as late rainy-season (kharif) crop. Semitropical areas receiving 500 to 750 mm rainfall are suitable for its cultivation. If one or two winter rains are received, then root development improves.

The crop requires a relatively dry season during its growing period. It can tolerate a temperature range of 20 to 38C. The plant grows from sea level to an altitude of 1500 meters
